As per the mission of the Government of West Bengal to allow access to higher education to the maximum number of students even to the remotest parts of the state, twenty new government general degree colleges were established in the 2015-2016 academic session. Government General Degree College at Kaliganj was one of these twenty colleges and one of the four new colleges in the district of Nadia. The college has already completed three years of its journey.
Affiliated to the University of Kalyani, the college offers Honours/Core Courses in six subjects, four in Humanities (Bengali, English, Sanskrit and History) and two in Science (Botany and Physiology). It is also offering Pass/Programme Courses in both Humanities (Bengali, English, Sanskrit and History) and Science (Botany, Physiology, Zoology and Chemistry). There is a possibility that Zoology may be offered as a Core Course subject from the 2018-2019 academic session subject to necessary approval by the affiliating university. At present there are 478 registered students in the college. We have completed the first three years, if we dare to say so, with certain degree of success. The first batch of students is now officially out and many of them have fared considerably well in their final university result. As per the declared university result of Part III, 2018, one student of Sanskrit has topped the university and another from English has made her place in the university top ten ranks. The students have also shown their zeal in extra-curricular activities; especially their enthusiasm in NSS activities has been remarkable. However, there is no luxury of being complacent as we have indeed “miles to go before [we] sleep”. As we enter into the fourth year of our college, we look forward to the continuation of unstinted help and good wishes showered on us since the inception of the college by all the stakeholders.
